Charities are 'vital' for schools

YFC could play a key role here.

Voluntary sector involvement in extended schools varies, but it is vital. Anne Longfield, chief executive of 4Children, said the sector "Will be increasingly involved in the planning and delivery" of this and other Government programmes. "Partnerships between schools and childminding networks, nurseries and community-based clubs are developing all the time," she said. "Linking provision in this way benefits parents and children. It also helps ensure providers maximise support and provide high-quality care." She went on to list organisations that are already offering school-based services. These include the Trojans Scheme, which runs programmes such as breakfast clubs and holiday play projects in south London; and Catz Clubs, which provides clubs, "incorporating childcare with support for the curriculum's literacy and numeracy programmes".

She also said that there are "clear strategic advantages" for schools and education authorities who want to develop their services by forming a partnership with existing providers.
